Concours d'art oratoire logo

2013 marked Canadian Parents for French – Manitoba’s 30th annual Concours d’art oratoire provincial finals competition. Concours d’art oratoire is a French public speaking competition open to students in Grades 3 to 12 and includes the categories of Early Immersion, Late Immersion, Core French, Core Extended French, Français and Impromptu.

An estimated 8,000 students participated at the classroom, school, and school division levels of competition during the last few months. Over 120 provincial finalists from Grades 3 -12 competed for 17monetary prizes in 25 categories on Saturday.

Other prizes included $1,000 scholarships to USB for students placing 1st in the Grade 11/12 categories, $200 and a plaque from Société franco-manitobaine (SFM) to the winner of the Grade 11/12 Impromptu category, and a $25 Keener membership from Conseil jeunesse provincial (CJP) to the 1st place winners in all Grade 9-12 categories. The winners of the Grade 11/12 categories will represent Manitoba at the CPF National Finals in Ottawa on May 25, 2013.

"French second language education in our province continues to excel and increase in popularity. For example, and of note, is that enrolment in French Immersion is now the highest in the history of the program," said Catherine Davies, Executive Director of Canadian Parents for French - Manitoba.

"This is the 30th year of Concours d’art oratoire in Manitoba, and the 8,000 Manitoban participants demonstrate that students continue to embrace this opportunity to showcase their public speaking skills en français,” concluded Catherine Davies.

Morning and afternoon awards ceremonies were attended by federal and provincial government elected officials, as well as representatives from partner organizations including the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages, USB, SFM, AMDI (Association manitobaine des directrices et directeurs d’immersion française), and EFM (Éducatrices et éducateurs francophones du Manitoba).

Certificates of Merit 2013

ATTENTION TEACHERS & PARENTS

OF GRADE 11/12 FRENCH IMMERSION AND BASIC (CORE) FRENCH!

*CPF-MB Certificates of Merit for

French Immersion and Basic (Core) French

Currently in Manitoba, there are many students, who do not have equitable access to FSL programming.  Consequently, many French Immersion students are not able to acquire the required number of credits to graduate from high school with a French Immersion Diploma.  Also, many Basic (Core) French students find that French is not offered as an option, or it conflicts with other subjects such as music and other languages; this is particularly so in the senior grades.

In spite of the challenges, there are still many students who make concerted efforts to continue their studies in French.  The CPF-MB Certificates of Merit for French Immersion and Basic (Core) French will serve to appreciate the endeavours of these very motivated students, by providing evidence that addresses the need to acknowledge the achievements of the following groups:

  • High school graduates with more than 7 but less than 14 French Immersion credits.
  • High school graduates who have continued their Basic (Core) French studies through Grades 11/12.

Personalized CPF-MB Certificates of Merit (en français and hard copy only) will be printed and mailed to Grade 12 graduates as requested, or to schools prior to graduation, and upon provision of:

·         The name of the student(s).

·         The home address and telephone number of the student(s)

·         The name of the school from which the student(s) will graduate.

·         The date the student(s) will graduate.

·         Evidence of the achievement of the student(s) i.e. documentation signed by the respective school Principal(s) confirming the acquisition of more than 7 but less than 14 French Immersion credits, or completion of Grade 11/12 Basic (Core) French.

This initiative will recognize those Manitoban students who persevere with their French studies. The certificates earned will be a tangible acquisition to student portfolios and also a source of pride.

To order personalized certificates, please contact

Janet via email at cpfmb@cpfmb.com or call

Le Festival Jeune artiste du Manitoba 2013

Are you between 11-19 years of age? Do you like to sing?

Are you in Basic French or French Immersion?

Then THIS is the opportunity for YOU!

Festival Jeune artiste du Manitoba is Manitoba's only French singing competition, and similar in style to Canadian Idol, only en français! There are 2 ways you can audition; you can come down to l'Université de Saint-Boniface on Friday, April 5, 2013 and audition in front of a panel of judges, or you can share your recorded audition on our YouTube page (www.youtube.com/user/cpfmb). From there, you can move on to quarter finals, semifinals and even the live finals. You can choose to audition a capella (no music, just your voice), by playing an instrument and singing by yourself, having someone else play an instrument for you while you sing or by singing along to an instrumental recording. Please note, we are only allowing individual singers, so if you have someone accompanying you on stage, only 1 of you can sing. There will also be awesome prizes for everyone who participates! Only 200 participants will be accepted and first come, first served.

You can also check out the winner from Jeune artiste du Manitoba 2010 on our home page at www.frenchforlife.ca.

If you want to register, or if you would like to book a Festival JAM presentation for your class, please contact Stephanie at frenchforlife@cpfmb.com or at 204-233-6403. JAM presentations are approximately 10 minutes long.

You can be the next Jeune artiste du Manitoba

French Rocks feat. Justin Lacroix - Cultural Tour 2012

Cultural Tour 2012 – “French Rocks! feat. Justin Lacroix”

This year, our Cultural Tour facilitator was Justin Lacroix, a bilingual singer/songwriter who has been touring Canada with his Funky, Folky, Bluesy Pop-Rock in English and en français since 2005. Justin visited 13 schools in Flin Flon, The Pas, Swan River, Roblin, Morden, Selkirk, Brandon, Elie, St. Adolphe, Winnipeg, Dugald and Stonewall.

The tour consisted of a song writing session in the morning, in which Justin created an original song with a group of students. A session full of brainstorming, crazy ideas and a lot of laughs, Justin and the students hammered out “One Direction pour toujours! One Direction tout les jours!” a song about boy band sensation One Direction to celebrate their 1 year anniversary of being a sensational boy band. A few students were given the opportunity to play a variety of instruments to help create the melody, and slowly but surely, the song began to take shape musically. To give you an idea of just how broad the song ideas were, the 2nd group that participated in the morning workshop created a song about Paul le panda rouge (Paul the red panda) who competed in a ping pong tournament in a pyramid.

The afternoon portion of the tour included a fun performance of Justin’s solo material for all those who were interested in participating. Justin played a wide variety of music; some French songs, some bilingual songs and some in English. The students at John Henderson Junior High were very much enjoying the concert as they clapped along and some students even sang when they knew the lyrics. Even the students who participated in the songwriting workshops got to get up on stage and share their new song with the whole school!

Here’s what some of the students and teachers had to say about “French Rocks!”:

-          “Justin a fait un travail magnifique pendant l’atelier d’écriture avec les élèves ! Il a vraiment su engagé les jeunes à écrire une chanson et à participer à la présentation de celle-ci. / Justin did magnificent work during the songwriting workshop with the students! He really engaged them in writing and presenting the song. “ - Teacher

-          “I really liked writing the song. It was really fun!” – Student

-          “Justin was really talented! He can play more than one instrument at a time!” – Student
