Once you have made the decision that you want French for your Life, there is nothing that can stop you. Students in Manitoba are fortunate to have access to many cultural, educational and social activities, en français.

Whether you are a French Immersion student, taking French classes or new to the language, this website endeavors to provide you with useful links and information that will help you along your path to becoming functionally bilingual in both of Canada’s official languages.

Here is a sample of some of the ways students can participate in French or bilingual opportunities in Manitoba, in Canada and abroad.

 
 

Official languages programs

Explore is an intensive French-immersion program that is offered during the spring and summer. If you are interested in learning or improving French and travelling to a new part of Canada, then Explore might be the perfect program for you.

Program length

  • For 13- to 15-year-olds, three-week summer sessions are available.

  • For 16 and older, Explore institutions offer spring and summer sessions, which last between 31 and 33 days.

Inspire youth to practice their English-speaking skills and share your culture while getting paid!

Embark on this nine-month Odyssey and you will:

  • earn paid work experience in a classroom setting (approximately $25 per hour).
  • discover whether the field of education is right for you.
  • experience francophone culture and way of life in New Brunswick or Quebec.
  • develop new skills and improve your French-speaking skills.

As a language assistant, you will work in a classroom setting with teachers, using games and activities to help students learn and improve English.

Manitoba-Quebec exchange program

The Manitoba-Québec Exchange Program is offered to students enrolled in the French Immersion Program who will be in Grade 10 or 11 next September. Students in the English Program with strong French skills can also apply. Manitoba Students are paired with Québec students for a six-month period – three months in Manitoba and three months in Québec.

Program Objectives 

  • Improve students French language communication skills.
  • Improve students’ confidence to speak French.
  • Develop students’ bilingual identity.
  • Create lifelong opportunities and foster openness to other languages and cultures.
  • Develop students’ greater independence and self-esteem.

How the program works

From September to December, Québec students live with their Manitoba host families and both students attend school in Manitoba. In turn, starting in February the Manitoba students live with their Québec host families and both students attend school in Québec, for the same length of time and under the same conditions.

 

The Forum Experience

The Forum for Young Canadians is a bilingual, non-partisan, and inclusive program that engages youth in Canada’s democratic process and institutions, seeking to educate, equip, empower and inspire youth for lifelong and meaningful civic engagement. 

Forum connects young leaders from across the country through their shared passions and interests and brings them together through a variety of experiential learning and networking opportunities.
